General James Birdseye McPherson gives a salute to General Sherman
on July 22, 1864. He then rides off to investigate the military
action taking place on the east side of Atlanta. While on his ride,
he is intercepted by Confederate skirmishers. When he attempts to
ride off he is shot from his horse and killed instantly. He was
a rising star in the Union Army, and was beloved by his troops and
by those in the Confederacy alike
