A Soldier's Dream
This painting represents the timeless dream about coming home. Every soldier, far from home has this dream; many do not get to realize it. In the autumn of 1864 desertion was very high among Confederate soldiers, many of them took unauthorized leave from their military units because they were fed up with war and also because they anticipated the defeat of the South to be at hand. The landscape here is of apple growing country, perhaps in the Appalachian foothills.
