| The troops pictured here are heading into a firefight at the battle of Chickamauga on September 20 1863, the bloodiest of all the battles to occur in the Civil Wars western theatre. Mounted on the horse is Colonel John T. Wilder directing his men who were outfitted with modern rapid firing weapons that held seven cartridges in the magazine. Used to thwart advances made by the attacking Confederate army they were instrumental in preventing the destruction of the Federals now retreating toward Chattanooga. The Federals remain the winter in Chattanooga before moving against General Joe Johnston and toward Atlanta in the spring. |
