Cornet Player, Atlanta 1864
Officers in the Confederate Army guarding Atlanta in the summer of 1864 believe this man to be the best cornet player they ever heard. In the evening after supper, he would play solo. On some occasions, a few other musicians would accompany him. The Federal troops in nearby trenches would sometimes play in response. He was a member of a brass band in Shoaff’s Battalion from Savannah, Georgia. In Ken Burns series on the Civil War the cornet player is mentioned and it is noted that both Confederates and Yankees ceased firing to hear him play.
