Elias Moon and several hundred prisoners were captured in Tennessee at the battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. After a long and roundabout trip aboard a railroad train, they found their way to Atlanta Georgia. Elias Moon, suffering from illness or wounds died in Atlanta. He was one of very few Federal troops to be buried in Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery. Here he is being taken off one of the boxcars in which the prisoners were kept, to be taken to one of several hospitals in the area where he died. The building in the far background was the Atlanta Concert Hall, which served as a hospital for the first few years of the war. |
