The last train out of Atlanta was the General, which was made famous by the Andrew’s raid in which James J. Andrews and a group of Federal soldiers from Ohio stole the train north of Marietta Georgia at a place called Big Shanty. They were pursued in another train called the Texas, which is now housed in the Cyclorama Museum in Atlanta. The General is shown here pulling away from the Atlanta Car Shed in the right background. It was the last train to leave Atlanta the day before it fell to Federal forces under General Sherman. Its destination was Macon, it only went about a dozen miles to the south where it had to reverse and back into Atlanta because the Federals were shelling the tracks. It was burned by Confederate troops when they evacuated Atlanta to prevent supplies from falling into Federal hands.
